Siri got it right......Magic - Part II

The easiest way to measure the offensive ability of a player is to look at his points. Lot's of points indicates a strong offensive player. Seems like solid reasoning but there is a fundamental flaw with just using points..... it does not account for the "cost of offense".

Cost of offense captures not only turnovers that occur while trying to make offensive plays, but all those little cheats or short-cuts offensive players take to put themselves in better offensive position, at the expense of providing good support for team mates. When these 'offensive risks' don't pan out, the player responsible is making a negative offensive contribution, which cuts into his positive offensive contributions.

Simply stated, a player that starts low in his own zone by supporting the D on breakouts typically doesn't fit the mold of a "scoring center". Where does Pavel Datsyuk fit?

Data is combined over the past two regular seasons at even strength. Rankings are based on 120 centermen.

BREAKOUT: rank 1st

To excel on the breakout a player must find passing lanes and be "Available". This is easier said than done particularly for those centermen born with the goal scoring gene. They are drawn to the offensive zone like a magnet.

Skills are based on frequency per 10 minutes of even strength ice-time. Rankings are based on 120 centermen.

OFFENSIVE ZONE PLAY: rank 3rd

The same ability to move in tight spaces, open passing lanes and create time and space, allowed Datsyuk to excel in the Offensive Zone just as he did on the Breakout. Datsyuk is second only to Sidney Crosby in High Impact Positive Offensive Plays (HIPOP's) in OZP.

......makes us wonder what kind of offensive numbers he may have put up with a few more short cuts.

Tough to argue with Siri, we will miss the Magic Man.
