The Penguins made several impressive performance leaps from the regular season to the playoffs.
(Results are listed as a percentile of 30 teams during the regular season or of 16 teams during the playoffs)
Their Overall level of contribution, which is the sum of all individual play by play contributions, climbed from the 83rd percentile (5 of 30) to the top spot among playoff teams (1 of 16)
Their Offense climbed from 90th in the regular season to the top spot in the playoffs.
PIT's Defense was most impressive, it jumped from the 23rd percentile in the regular season to the 68th, which placed them 5th defensively among all playoff teams. Four teams were stronger defensively than the Pens but none came close to matching the Pen's offensive proficiency. The key for every team is being able to maximize both offensive and defensive contributions by player selection, coaching and team system.
Where did all that improvement come from?
From the regular season to the playoffs, the PIT D-core went from a percentile ranking of:
37 to 44 in Overall and
53 to 50 in Offense, and
33 to 25 in Defense.
From regular season to playoff, the PIT forwards went from a percentile ranking of:
90 to 1st in both Overall and Offense, and
17 to 81 in Defense
The Pens forwards enjoyed a 64% ranking improvement to place them third among the 16 forward groups in the playoffs, up from (24 of 30) in the regular season.
It's a remarkable transformation by the Pens forwards and a key reason why Pittsburgh was able to suffocate opposition offense.
Stay tuned in the next article we will take a closer look at the pieces that helped the Pens raise THE STEEL CURTAIN that helped bring yet another Championship to Pittsburgh.
